Purify with Petitgrain: Plant Power for Pimples

The body uses the main channels – bladder, digestive, kidney, etc. –  as the preferred method of elimination of toxins and excess energy.

When the main channels are blocked, however, the body may eliminate toxins through the skin: what we know as pimples, rashes, or additional skin issues may ensue.

We can then interpret from the skin what is happening in the body. The best course of action is to clear blockages in the main channels by adjusting our diet and/or employing practices such as breath work, yoga, qigong, and meditation.

Salt baths can assist with skin issues, as well as calming herbs such as chamomile, lavender, and rose, and soothing balms of bees wax or coconut oil.

While you work to open the main channels, one particular plant essence can be a powerful ally in quickly clearing congested skin:

Petitgrain essential oil is the preferred plant remedy for pimples.

Petitgrain oil is distilled from the stems and leaves of the orange tree, as opposed to its other family members:

Sweet orange – from the rind of the ripe orange

Neroli – the seductive orange blossom

All share the same family tree, however, each has their own distinct personality.

Petitgrain is particularly known for its toning qualities. It is used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to tone and purify the skin, helping to circulate chi or life force energy.

Apply the oil neat to acne, pimples, or blemishes. Or add to a carrier oil such as coconut or argan for a face serum.

Make your own Natural Face Cleanser with petitgrain.

As a bonus, petitgrain is also uplifting and calms the nervous system.

Petitgrain may not be as sweet as her cousin sweet orange, but I think clearing up the complexion is pretty sweet indeed.

I was skeptical at first to use oil as a cleanser. 3 years later, I couldn’t imagine using anything else. My skin is never dry, oily or inflamed. I now use only natural oils on my skin. I boosted my oil with effective and beautiful enhancements to create a nourishing cleanser, naturally.

Natural Face Cleanser:

Fill a bottle (I like Miron violet glass for my best oils) 60% with jojoba oil. Jojoba oil is the closest to our natural sebum, responsible for keeping hair and skin supple.

Top up the remaining 40% with a good quality castor oil. I use Mountain Rose Herb’s organic castor oil. This oil draws impurities from the pores and is antibacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-inflammatory yet nourishing for the skin and hair.

I then add essential oil of petitgrain, about 15 drops per 50 mls of facial oil. If skin is prone to breakouts add more petitgrain This citrus essential oil is extracted from the leaves and twigs of the orange tree. It is both refreshing and calming, and clears greasy skin and blemishes. Petitgrain has both sedative and nervine qualities, making it a good choice for pre-bedtime cleansing. Used in Traditional Chinese Medicine as a tonifier, petitgrain assists in circulating chi.

To this I add a drop of pure organic Bulgarian rose essential oil, a pricey but nourishing treat for the skin. Suitable for all skin types, rose oil is used for broken capillaries and wrinkles, and is balancing and nurturing for skin and soul.

Rose geranium essential oil makes a beautiful replacement for the stronger and more expensive Bulgarian rose oil. Use more liberally, adding 8 or 10 drops. An uplifting aromatic, rose geranium is astringent and regenerative. It is used for a variety of skin issues including eczema, broken capillaries, varicose veins, and premature aging, and balances all skin types. Rose geranium is popular in Ayurveda as it pacifies all doshas and balances hormone levels in women.

There it is. Now you know my secret face cleanser formula. Shake well before each use to disperse all oils. Use 2 -3 small squirts on a warm, moist cloth and massage over skin. The small amount of essential oils and cleanser required to wash allows me to use this as an eye make-up remover as well, although use caution and keep eyes closed. Pregnant women and those with medical conditions should use caution with essential oils. Consult a physician or professional if health conditions exist.

Play with the recipe, make it your own. Try more rose geranium than petitgrain or add neroli or lavender. Create a nourishing treat for your skin and self, naturally.
